When I was on Twitter, at some point a lot of people were mentioning the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 as the music festival they WISH they had been at.*
So many people were saying it that I had serious misgivings about it.
But I started checking into the festival, and at some point in my half-assed research I read this: “The Island’s transport services were already stretched by the annual influx of summer holiday-makers at the same time. French anarchists armed with knives were already causing trouble on the ferry crossing.“
One attendee recounted:
That evening Ricki Farr & Co. decided to try and move everyone off the hill by employing their joke-figure security guards and dogs, along with a large contingent of IOW fuzz at the top of the hill. We joined a large group of French Anarchists and in the darkness, charged the line of guards and police on the steep hillside, which is a full 200 feet high!Frank Matson
The above was found on a website called UK Rock Festivals (the site is not secure).
And now I wish I had been able to go to the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970.
French anarchists running to catch the ferry back from the Isle of Wight festival in 1970??!!
