North from Rome
Author: Helen MacInnes
Fiction/PB/1958 (2012)/394 pp
One of the blurbs on the front cover of the edition I have is by Newsweek: “Helen MacInnes can hang her cloak and dagger right up there with Eric Ambler and Graham Greene.”
I only mention this because I have a feeling that I must have bought it because Eric Ambler was mentioned.
She was also deemed “The queen of the spy writers” by the Sunday Express.
Imagine my confusion (this was, literally, 5 minutes ago) when I realized this book was originally published in 1958! So I looked up the author, and she was born in 1907! How have I never heard of her before?
Who cares? I didn’t read the book.
